South America
The name America is derived from that of the Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci, one of the earliest European explorers of the New World. South America is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea to the northwest and north, the Atlantic Ocean to the northeast, east, and southeast, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. In the northwest it is joined to North America by the Isthmus of Panama, a land bridge narrowing to about 50 miles (80 km) at one point. A Drake passage, south of Cape Horn, separates South America from Antarctica.
South America is a continent located in the western hemisphere, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Caribbean Sea to the north. It is the fourth largest continent in the world, with a diverse range of landscapes, cultures, and natural wonders. Some of the most notable features of South America include the Andes Mountains, which are the longest mountain range in the world, stretching over 7,000 km from Venezuela to Chile; the Amazon Rainforest, which is the largest tropical rainforest in the world and home to an incredible variety of plant and animal species; and the Atacama Desert, which is one of the driest places on Earth.South America is home to a rich and diverse cultural heritage, with indigenous populations dating back thousands of years. The continent was also heavily influenced by European colonization, which brought new languages, religions, and traditions to the region.
